Golf Carts and Wheelies

The introduction of the golf cart was the demise of most caddy programs at golf courses. Now with the price of gas skyrocketing, the golf cart industry may see a huge surge in production as some people start buying golf carts to take short trips around town in. We met up with Glen Lake of Bad Ass Golf Carts in Las Vegas to discuss what cool things people are asking for on their custom built golf carts. Glen told us that the orders for custom golf carts have almost doubled in the last 3 months when gas prices started hitting $3 a gallon consistently. The custom carts they build are able to go up to 45 mph even though he said they could go up to almost 100 mph but for liablity issues, they don't want to build those.
Some of the most recent orders include an 8 passenger 4 wheel drive model they were building when we were in their shop. Glen said that people are just fed up with the high price of gas already, even though it has only been a couple of months where gas prices are really high, they want to be able to have other options in case gas does go to $10 a gallon.
Since they build custom golf carts, Glen said that people want to trick them out with all the hottest gadgets, IPod Connections, custom paint and wheels and their own special design and logo's. He said he has to warn people the more electrical gadgets they ask for, the less mileage they will be able to get between charges.
If gas prices keep going the way they have been lately, we may all be driving golf carts and not just to the course.
If the golf cart industry is overrun with new orders soon, maybe the only option at the golf course will be to hire a Caddychick !. |
